Blog # 14 — The Most Frightened I’ve Ever Been

In the fall of 1981, after a tour of Israel, I spent the school year attending the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. “Il Centro” as we called it was located in Trastevere (across the Tiber) section of Rome, on the Vatican side but a medieval section outside the ancient city. One night a friend of mine from the Centro, Richard, ventured out with me to watch “Superman” show at the English speaking movie theater in Trastevere. The theater is located near a square famous for marijuana smoking hippies, transients and Eurorail pass backpackers to hang out for all ours of the day and night.

When the movie ended, it was about 1:00 AM, Rich and I began our walk back to the Centro. While crossing the plaza, a Roman city police car (the little blue and whites with the scummy cops inside, not the Nazi looking federal police), came up to the curb and the police began shouting at us to get into the car. We had no idea why and didn’t comply. The policemen stopped the car, got out, and threw us in the back seat.

At first we assumed we must be suspects for something we didn’t do and that we were about to begin a scary adventure into the Roman legal system. But soon we realized our fate was to be far worse. Our Italian wasn’t very good but we knew enough to know the two policemen were trying to decide which way to turn at every intersection. One of us, I don’t remember which of us, said to the other, that we must not be going to the police station because they didn’t seem to know how to get there. A tremendous sensation of fear and dread immediately descended upon us, almost terror. The two of us knew something very bad was intended for us, and we conspired in the back that no matter what happened, NOT to fight back, not to give any excuse for these men to use their guns.

The car went south, further south, till it was in South Rome, many miles away. South Rome’s basically the ghetto area of Rome. Then the car turned down an alley; this was about 130 or 2 in the morning. It drove down this alley till there was a clearing that was filled with railroad tracks. I guess we were in an abandoned railroad yard in the middle of a ghetto in south Rome at 2AM.

The policemen ordered us out of the car. We complied. They began yelling at us in Italian something like “why’d you do it?” or something like that. We’d respond “do what?” and they would strike us, back handed across the face. We’d fall down and writhe with pain on the ground. They continued shouting, kicked us, picked us up and struck us again. Over and over and over again. I was being beaten like I’d never experienced nor imagined. I was sure this was the last night of my life. I thought of my mother, who would never even know what had happened to me or know even my whereabouts. I cried out to God, ‘save me’. No theology, here, just an elementary, simple “save me”.

Suddenly four young people arrived. At least one was a woman, but the others I believe were men. They were dressed in long dark coats and spoke completely fluent English. I remember the woman leaning over me on the ground and saying “show him your card”. I knew immediately what she meant. In my pocket was a photo id card, showing that the Italian Department of Culture had me registered as an official “alien archaeologist”. You see, I was there studying archaeology and had registered with the department and had this id with a very official “La Republica D’Italia” stamp across my face. In truth, it was a fancy museum pass that allowed me to go for free to archaeology sites and to have non-public access. But when I pulled it out of my pocket and showed it to my attacker, he took one look at it, threw it on the ground, shouted to his colleague and jumped in the squad car and sped away. I’m not even sure if the policemen saw the four young people or not, it was confusing of course and I was still on the ground rolling around in agony.

Then I remember not much other than being lifted up off the railroad tracks by these people, and they carried me (and Rich) somehow to a very busy street, where they hailed a taxi, told the taxi to take us home, which it did.

Well, I I’ve thought about this a great deal over the years. Maybe it was just luck that there were four young people near by, in an abandoned rail yard in south Rome at 2am, who happened upon us, spoke perfect English and were willing to walk up and intervene in a situation where armed Roman policemen were beating two foreigners, then like Samaritans carried these two grown men to a taxi and paid for it to take us home.

Let’s see, could there have been some kind of nightclub nearby? What about the English? What about the bravery to intervene? What about knowing about my “card”? How’d she know to say that to me? What about the Good Samaritan taxi ride? What are the odds of all that? What’s easier to believe, this sort of astronomically unlikely set of circumstances, or to believe that it was not yet my appointed time and that God sent his angels to rescue me?

Maybe I hallucinated and saw the woman only in my imagination? Then how did I get to the taxi?

Jeremiah 17:8
“For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.

Fearless Series Kick Off Tonight

The Fearless Series starts tonight at 7pm  in the Maranatha Chapel sanctuary. Here are some fearless key verses to meditate on this week.

Matthew 10:28-30
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
Luke 12
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
4 “I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
John 14:26-28
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28 You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

Blog #13 “Gutter Guards”

“Gutter Guards”

When my oldest son had his seventh birthday party we had it at a nearby bowling alley. I hadn’t been to a bowling alley in ages. It was a real treat and brought back some memories of my own childhood.

Sitting there watching these little six and seven year olds play I noticed that there were railings along each side of the bowling lane, in order to keep the little fellows’ balls from going into the gutter–the gutter guards. It was quite a site watching these young novice bowlers toss their ball without aim and seeing it zig and then zag as it bounced from one gutter guard to the other until finally making it to the pins.

Then I looked over to the left and of course saw experienced bowlers gliding there way to the lanes, effortlessly tossing the ball straight down the middle.

I guess I’m a pretty strange guy, because as I sat there I thought I was watching a pretty good illustration of life, especially as we’re young or weak Christians, our aim is to hit the pin, but alas we zig and we zag, heading from gutter to gutter. What we need are some gutter guards!

This isn’t such a strange analogy, actually, I think it’s kind of Scriptural. For, although I won’t go so far as to say the Bible talks about bowling, it does describe our walk as staying on the “path” and it frequently describes the Godly life as staying in the “way”. In the verses below, note the use of the terms “way” and “path” and for my purpose, translate it “lane.” Likewise, when you read about going astray or wandering or wavering, think of gutters and zig zags.

Listen to the advice of Solomon:

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be true.
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Prov 4:25-27 (KJV)

Could this not be advice to a bowler?

The Godly life is like bowling?

Like bowling, we need to stay on the path, in the lane and out of the gutter:

Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
Let not thine heart decline to her ways; go not astray in her paths.

Prov 7:24-25 (KJV)

Avoid those gutter balls:

Staying out of the gutter has its benefits:

Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Psalms 37:4-5 (KJV)

Likewise, going into the gutter has its consequence:

Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way…

Prov 15:10 (KJV)

But clearly we can’t do this ourselves, we need gutter guards, do we not?

Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

Prov 20:24 (KJV)

But where will we find gutter guards?

God provides them:

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his commandments.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

Psalms 37:23-24 (KJV)

Gutter Guard Number 1: Stay in the Word:

Listen to how the Psalmist prays to stay in the lane:

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous size
My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.
Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy lovingkindness.
I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before The.
I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD put me not to shame.
I will run the way of truth.
Thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my
Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to thine own understandings.
Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Psalms 119:9-11, 27–37, 104 (KJV)

Likewise, Solomon also describes staying in the lane as being the fruit of being in the Word:

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; ” So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to his Word. Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk with Him. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his commandments. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Prov 2:1-9 (KJV)

Gutter Guard Number 2: Staying In Fellowship:

According to the author of Hebrews, if we don’t want to zig and zag, we should fellowship with other believers:

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering;
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day

Heb 10:23-25 (KJV)

The Psalmist said the way was in the sanctuary:

I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember I will meditate also of all thy work, Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

Psalms 77:11-13 (KJV)

Gutter Guard Number 3: Prayer:

We need to pray to stay on the path. We need to ask God to guide us correctly to the pins and to keep us out of the gutter.

Let’s turn again to the prayers of the Psalmist:

Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path,

Psalms 27:11 (KJV)

And again,

Search me, O God, and know my heart: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalms 139:23-24

And yet again,

Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalms 143:7-8 (KJV)

It’s not our bowling skill; it’s the gutter guards that guide us.

It’s not about increasing our skill; it’s about God’s grace in giving us gutter guards.

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to the faithful. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity;
yea, every good path.

Prov 2:2-9 (KJV)

Paul’s promised us God would provide us with gutter guards also:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

So, the next time you bowl, you have something to think about. And the next time you pray or meditate, consider the lessons we learn from bowling.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,100 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 52 trips to carry that many people.
